Unite names and shames NHS trusts and PCTs refusing bank holiday
pay for royal wedding
11 April 2011
Unite, Britain's biggest union, will today (Monday 11 April)
name and shame over 100 English NHS trusts and PCTs
refusing to pay bank holiday rates to staff working during the
royal wedding on April 29 2011 (see notes to editors).
NHS trusts in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all
paying staff the correct bank holiday rates according to the NHS
national agreement (Agenda for Change) but a significant number of
NHS trusts in England are stubbornly refusing to recognise the
special occasion and to support the spirit of the government's
decision to give staff an extra bank holiday.
In some cases part-time workers are being hit particularly badly
where they are only receiving toil on a pro-rata basis.
Unite national officer for health, Rachael Maskell, said: "NHS
staff will be saving lives, looking after the sick and prepared for
emergencies while most of Britain will be taking a well earned
break or celebrating the royal wedding. Despite the
dedication and the huge pressure on NHS staff, a significant number
of NHS trusts are stubbornly refusing to pay bank holiday rates for
working during the royal wedding.
"The government has given the country an extra bank holiday to
mark the royal wedding but NHS trust chief executives on six figure
salaries are refusing to recognise the spirit of the occasion.
These trusts still have time to do the right thing and recognise
the valuable contribution NHS staff make to this country."
Under the national agreement for the NHS called Agenda for
Change staff working during a bank holiday are entitled to an
enhancement in their pay ranging from double time to time plus 60
per cent. Trusts across Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are
paying the bank holiday rates on the day of the royal wedding.
However, a significant number of trusts across England are refusing
to pay the bank holiday enhancement for the event. Agenda for
Change stipulates staff get eight bank holidays. The royal wedding
is an extra bank holiday announced by the government, which British
workers should be entitled to, but some trusts are using the
national agreement to break the spirit of the government's decision
to give workers an extra bank holiday.
Aside from the costly reorganistion of the NHS being pushed
through with the Health and Social Care bill, set to cost at least
£4 billion, the government is also demanding the NHS makes £20
billion in cuts over the next four years.
