Unite members begin 24 hour stoppage at Glasgow Herald and The
Evening Times
5 May 2010
Unite members are to start a series of 24 hour strikes at the
Glasgow Herald and the Evening Times over a pay freeze. The first
strike day will begin at 8am on Thursday 6th May and will effect
the paper's coverage of the general election results.
Over 140 Unite members are striking because they are being
denied a pay rise for the second year running. With inflation
running high Unite wants Glasgow Herald and Evening Times' owners,
Newsquest to return to the negotiating table with a sensible
offer.
Unite regional officer, Norman King said: "Our members are angry
that they are being forced to accept a pay freeze for the second
year running despite Glasgow Herald and the Evening Times posting
profits. Our members do not want to be striking, but feel they have
been left with no choice by a management that refuse to properly
negotiate."
Negotiations between Unite and Newsquest have been going on for
several months but the company has failed to move from a position
of an enforced pay freeze.
Members striking include printing and production workers and
clerical and advertising staff.
