Unite calls for an end to pay secrecy at IBM
14 June 2011
Today (14 June), 100s of UK
staff working for
IBM will be demanding that the company ends its highly secretive
pay system and introduces a transparent and discrimination
proof one.
In 1935, IBM was
one of the first companies to attempt to uphold the principle
of equal pay for equal work but the company is refusing to
share the details of its pay system with Unite and demonstrate that
it is discrimination free.
Unite national officer, Kevin O'Gallagher said: "Unite has
been seeking answers to how IBM intends to ensure that its highly
secretive pay system stops staff being the subject of
discrimination and continued unfairness in the workplace. To date
the company has ignored all
reasonable approaches but Unite intends to hold the company to
account."
On 6th June it was IBM's 100th birthday. IBM union members produced a happy
birthday video (www.imfmetal.org/IBMunions)
in which they tell the company it should treat its workers better
in its next century.
IBM unions from around the world have
come together to form the IBM Global Union Alliance through the
International Metalworkers’ Federation, European
Metalworkers’ Federation and UNI Global Union to demand that the
company respect worker and trade union rights wherever it
operates.
