Rally in Dover to oppose dock privatisation and support workers’
rights
12 October 2010
As part of an international day of action, co-ordinated by the
International Transport Federation, Unite the union will hold a
rally in Dover tomorrow (13 October) to oppose the privatisation of
Dover docks.
The rally is also calling for the standardisation of terms and
conditions across the EU for workers involved in transport
logistics and for dock workers.
Marchers will assemble at the Bluebirds restaurant, 137
Snarsgate Street, Dover from 9:30am. The march will move off at
10:30am and proceed across the A20 onto the Esplanade, Waterloo
Crescent and Marine Parade where it will stop for 40 minutes and
then return on the same route back to Bluebirds restaurant where
the march will conclude. There will be a meeting inside the
restaurant with speakers from Unite and the ITF.
Unite national officer, Ron Webb, said: "We're expecting a great
turn out. People want to make it absolutely clear that the
privatisation of Dover docks would be a disaster. The UK is an
island nation. We need a first class sea port like Dover to
be in public hands. There is simply too much at stake to leave the
running of this vital link to Europe in the hands of those who will
milk this national treasure for profits."
