Invitation to a briefing: Health and Social Care bill

28 January 2011

As bill begins commons' stages, new analysis reveals the full implications for the NHS

Unite highlights the small print paving the way for private healthcare companies to take-over the NHS.

  • Unite MPs and media briefing
  • Monday, 31 January 2011 at 1.00pm in the Grimond Room, Portcullis House, House of Commons

Unite, the country's biggest union, is to provide new and forensic analysis for journalists and MPs as the Health and Social Care bill has its second reading.

This dedicated briefing will offer detailed responses to questions relating to the intention and scope of the legislation, particularly as the government intends to rush the 280 clause bill through the Commons in break-neck time.  Unite understands it could begin its standing committee stages as early as Thursday next week, leaving little time for MPs to get to grips with the enormity of the proposals.

Unite's health experts will provide new insights into the small print and explain how this will hasten the privatisation of the NHS, revealing how the legislation is heavily weighted in favour of private companies when they come into competition with the current NHS, even when it costs the UK taxpayer to ease private providers into the enforced healthcare market.

The union has repeatedly warned that the government's proposals will hasten the demise of the NHS's universal service, free at the point of delivery and cherished by the public since its founding in 1948.

Leading the interpretation and analysis will be Gail Cartmail, Unite assistant general secretary for public services; Barrie Brown, Unite’s lead officer for nursing; and Dr Ron Singer, chair of Unite/Medical Practitioners Union and the MPU representative on the GP’s committee of the British Medical Association.

Unite's health bill researcher will also take interested MPs and media through the bill, including the impact assessments which the government has not widely promoted.

Unite will also present information revealing how the private sector is helping to shape health policy.
