Government wastes opportunity to get tough on tax avoidance
6 December 2010
Reacting to the measures to tackle tax avoidance announced by
the government today (6 December) Unite general secretary-elect,
Len McCluskey, said: The coalition government's so-called clampdown
on tax avoidance is a Christmas gift worth billions to businesses
exploiting tax loopholes. The government just wasted a golden
opportunity to show it was on the side of fairness and to make sure
big business paid its fair share of tax.
"If the government got tough on tax avoidance it could have
raised up to £25 billion. Instead the coalition will continue
dismantling our public services while their friends in the city -
the culprits of the financial crisis - avoid paying their fair
share of tax. Until the government closes all the tax loopholes, we
are not all in this together."
