Electronics workers in South Wales begin industrial
action
8 March 2010
Workers from AB Connectors at Abercynon in South Wales will
begin industrial action tomorrow (9th March) in a dispute over pay.
The dispute could spread to other parts of the group as members
call for national action.
123 workers at the company, which is part of the TT group, have
rejected the company's decision to freeze their pay and will start
a continuous overtime ban from Tuesday 9th March. AB Connectors
asked workers last year to accept a pay freeze, informing them all
other workers across the group had been asked to do the same.
But other colleagues in parts of
the group in England received a 2.85% increase in pay.
David Lewis, regional officer for Unite the Union said:"Unite
members in Abercynon are rightly angry at being misled and are
determined to press for a pay increase this year. We are aware that
other workers across the group are also preparing industrial action
ballots.
"Some workers in England got a pay increase, yet others are
being offered 'jam tomorrow'. They do not want to take
industrial action but they feel they have no other option. Unite is
prepared to stand up to the company's arbitrary decisions and
unwillingness to negotiate properly."
Instead of a pay increase, the electronics company offered a 2%
bonus payment, based on targets, and if achieved only applicable
after an assessment is made in June 2010.
