Cadbury workers plan protest against Kraft takeover
26th January 2010
Workers from Cadbury’s UK plants will be joined by members of
the public at a protest on Wednesday, 27th January in support of
the fight for a future for the chocolate maker and its workers.
The workforce and the Midlands community are joining forces in
the battle to stop Kraft Foods’ proposed takeover of Cadbury
changing the 200-year old company beyond recognition. Unite
says Kraft must give assurances that the interests of the workforce
will not be swept aside in the takeover, and that the quality of
much-loved products will be safeguarded too.
Cadbury workers will hold a protest on Bournville Green in
Birmingham from 11.30am until 12.30pm. They will be waving placards
which say “Don’t sell us out” and handing out leaflets to keep
Cadbury independent.
Unite national officer, Jennie Formby, said: “Our members and
their friends across the Midlands deserve a voice in this
takeover. They are angry that to date they have been forced
to look on from the sidelines as the big money players carve up
their company.
“Our protest is intended to send a clear message to Cadbury
shareholders – don’t sell Cadbury out.
“Cheese and chocolate must not be a recipe for disaster for
Cadbury. The livelihoods of thousands of workers and the
future of a great UK manufacturer will be decided in the next
week. We urge Cadbury shareholders, who now have the fate of
the company in their hands, to think very carefully about Kraft’s
revised offer and ask themselves is it in the best interests of
either business."
Unite members and representatives will be available for
interviews at the protest taking place on Bournville Green,
Birmingham.
Workers from Cadbury UK sites will also be attending a
parliamentary lobby in Westminster on Tuesday, 2nd February,
2010.
