Birmingham Tory council's 2,000 job cuts ‘a body blow to the city's
public services and economy'
23rd February 2010
“Birmingham was the birthplace of local government,” Jack
Dromey, deputy general secretary of Unite the union will today
(Tuesday, 23 February) tell a rally outside of the council chamber
in which the Tory administration will propose major cuts to the
city’s public services.
”Those great municipal pioneers must be turning in their
graves. Tory-led Birmingham city council’s 2,000 job cuts
will be a body blow to vitally needed public services and the
economy of a city hard hit by recession.
”Two to three less workers in every nursery will harm
children. The nine per cent cut in youth services will harm
young people without the facilities and support necessary to build
their future.
”The cut in park rangers will harm the upkeep of Birmingham’s
parks, the pride of the city. And the elderly, who have built
Birmingham and who deserve dignity in retirement, will be harmed if
they can no longer count on meals on wheels and the support they
need in the twilight of their lives.
”Birmingham’s public servants are crucial to the quality of
life. They serve the community. They support the most
vulnerable. They raise people up when they are down.
Now 2,000 will be thrown on the dole just at a time when the local
economy needs public investment. These Tory council cuts,
backed by David Cameron, are a disgrace.”
