Unite safety representatives at Prestwick nominated for STUC award
31st March 2010
A total of 17 Unite safety representatives from Spirit
AeroSystems (Europe) Ltd, based in Prestwick, have been nominated
for the Scottish Trade Union Council’s Safety Representative Award
- the winner of which will be announced at the STUC Conference in
Dundee between 19 and 21 April.
Spirit AeroSystems provides customers in the commercial
aerospace market with major airframe structures, principally for
aircraft wings, and repair/overhaul services, in addition to
engineering and design support.
The reps have been nominated because of their work - which has
the successful backing of management and the reps’ roles have
evolved to include all aspects of health and safety from
inspections to risk assessments, audits, accident investigation,
training and development.
In the wider community the reps have developed training
courses and materials which have been delivered to children and
head teachers from a number of East Ayrshire primary schools
in support of their ‘Educational Raids’ programme where
information, knowledge and experience on delivering health and
safety risk assessments was shared as well as an overview of civil
and criminal law.
In addition, the reps have also supported the Strathclyde Fire
and Rescue Service during a recent fire safety audit and provided
the service with a tour of Sprint’s Prestwick site.
Scott McLarty, operations and hr director for Spirit, commented:
”Our Unite safety reps fulfil a vital role within the business. By
working closely with them, we have been able to protect the health
and well-being of Spirit employees and visitors to our site.“
Unite health and safety adviser, Debbie Hutchings, said: ”The
reps have built up a tremendous body of work in promoting health
and safety both in the company and within the wider
community. The company, as a responsible employer, has given
our reps great support which we applaud. The reps deserve to win
this Scottish TUC award – and we are all keeping our fingers
crossed.”
