Humberside and the North East
2 November 2010
Tony Woodley, joint general secretary of the UK's biggest union,
Unite, will address union activists from Yorkshire and Humberside
and the North East this week to launch the unions' opposition to
the coalition government's cuts.
The meetings are part of a national tour by Tony Woodley to take
the case against the cuts to the union's one and a half million
members. Tony Woodley will be available to interview before and
after the events.

The comprehensive spending review outlined by the chancellor of
the exchequer, George Osborne, on 20 October 2010 will have a
brutal impact on local authorities, health and education across
Yorkshire and Humberside and the North East.
There are already countless examples of the effects of these
proposed cuts, such as up to 40 per cent fewer police officers on
the beat, almost 100 regional school rebuilding projects scrapped
and a government prediction of 500,000 job losses as a result of
its 'slash and burn' policies, including teachers, administrators
and health care workers.
Unite's joint general secretary Tony Woodley said: "It won't be
the leafy stockbroker belt that feels this pain it will be ordinary
families. The coalition has no mandate for the assassination
of our services - and for those that voted Lib Dem, this is nothing
short of a betrayal.
"Believe me, when the penny drops and people realise that the
schools, hospitals and social services they built and paid for
through hard graft and taxes are being destroyed by a political
elite, rage will boil."
Unite regional secretary Davey Hall said: "Unite intends to
expose this government for what it is doing to our region, our
communities and our people. Over the coming weeks and months we
will be building a coalition against the cuts to oppose the misery
and hardship that people in our region will have to face."
