Unite on housing hit
19 October 2010
Unite said today that the Coalition's attack on housing
support is a shameful and unworkable attack on ordinary
people.
Gail Cartmail, Unite assistant general secretary, said:
"The proposed removal of secure tenure - by linking tenure to
income - is unworkable and will do nothing to tackle the five
million households on the housing waiting lists.
"Added to the attacks on housing benefit and council house
building, the Coalition is creating a cocktail that will take us
back to 'Cathy Come Home' times. Overcrowding, increased health
inequalities and the detrimental learning impact to children will
be massive.
"Declining council-owned stock won't just hurt needy
tenants - it will also mean increasing unemployment in construction
and supply sectors.
"For our members' children or our young members this the
third nasty blow to them in under a week. Joblessness among the
young is increasing, costs of further education will put this
beyond their means and now they are told they stand no chance at
all of a decent home to rent.
"The private sector is not interested in those who do not
have the means to pay for housing. Now the Coalition is shamefully
turning its back on them too."
