Unite conference note
10 September 2010
Protect rights at work, fight for our services and save
manufacturing - Unite calls at TUC Congress 2010
Unite, the country's biggest union, will push for coordinated
action to protect public services, manufacturing and fundamental
employment rights from coalition cuts at this year's Congress in
Manchester which runs from Monday 13 - Thursday 16 September..
The union will be playing a lead role in the following key
conference debates:
- Employment rights: Unite's motion will focus
on the scandal of the anti-union laws, now being used by a growing
number of employers to nullify democratic strike votes in the
courts (Monday afternoon). A joint fringe meeting with
Liberty will highlight the attacks by employers on human and
employment rights, most graphically illustrated by British Airways'
continuing war on its workforce (Tuesday lunchtime).
- Defending public services: Government plans to
slash 25 per cent from public sector spending will see heartland
towns and cities, still reeling from the shrinkage in manufacturing
and finance jobs, pay the heaviest price. Unite will be pressing
for Congress to support its call for a massive cross-community
campaign to support our communities and stop the attacks to social
provision (Monday morning).
- Saving UK manufacturing: The sector
contributes over £160 billion to the UK economy yet the scandal of
government's failure to support Sheffield Forgemasters reveals the
calamitous consequences of the absence of a government strategy for
industry (Wednesday morning).
