Tyneside Safety Glass – Unite members take official strike action
7 October 2010
Striking Unite members at Tyneside Safety Glass will hold a
meeting at the Saltwell social club on Bensham Road, Gateshead, on
Friday, 8 October commencing at 1.00pm in order to determine their
future strike action strategy.
73 Unite members at Tyneside Safety Glass in Gateshead commenced
strike action on Monday 20 September 2010.
The industrial action was called after the company imposed a
second year of pay freezes, combined with changes to shift patterns
which in some cases added ten hours to the working week taking
Unite members up to the maximum 48 hour working week.
Unite regional officer Bill Green said: "Over the past two years
our members have been intimidated and bullied. Staff have been
informed of shift changes with minimal notice, giving them little
or no family life.
"The employer has openly informed our shop stewards that it
intends to break the union on site. Basic pay is not that far
above the national minimum wage and a further year of pay freezes
will see their pay fall closer to the minimum wage."
