Election battle is on, Unite chooses Labour

6th May 2010

A message to Unite members

The election battle is now on for Thursday May 6th. In just 30 days you can help decide yours, your union’s and your country’s future. It’s the most important election since 1997. It is a choice between Labour and the Conservatives – a choice between action to lock in the recovery and benefit the many or tax breaks for the rich few and cuts for the rest of us.

Over recent months Unite members have told us about their election issues. Job security, the economy, crime, immigration, housing and the NHS are high up on the list.

Over the next 30 days you’ll be bombarded with politicians’ promises on all these issues. So, it’s worth comparing the Labour and Conservative approaches:

The Issues

With Labour:

  Under the Tories:
Job security   Action to cut unemployment lock in the recovery, invest in jobs and skills   Cuts which will put a million public sector jobs and tens of thousands in the private sector at risk

The economy   Action to support jobs and businesses, keep people in their homes and pay off public debt through growth and fairer taxes   Cuts which put the recovery at risk but unfair, unwarranted tax breaks for the rich

Crime   Action to support local policing has seen crime fall   Record high levels of crime

Immigration   Action to set in place controls and now falling immigration   No systems in place when they were in power and no credible plans for the future

Housing   Action and £7.5bn investment for Council housing   Cuts agenda and undermining Council housing

The NHS   Action to continue record levels of investment, cancer patients’ guarantee   Scrap the cancer guarantee and spending cuts likely to impact on waiting times

The next 30 days is decision time. On each and every issue raised by Unite members we believe it is Labour that has the best plans for the future – yours and your union’s future. That’s why we’re asking you to back your union and back Labour on Thursday May 6th.

Many thanks for your support as a Unite member.
