350 Merseyside taxi drivers to receive NVQs for customer service
8th April 2010
A total of 350 taxi drivers from Merseyside – members of Unite,
the largest trade union in the country – will be receiving their
NVQs in customer service tomorrow (Friday, 9 April).
The taxi drivers will be congratulated by local MPs when they
come to collect their certificates at Jack Jones House, 143 Sefton
Street, Liverpool L8 5SN between 10am and 12 noon tomorrow
(Friday).
The Unite taxi project has seen the first 350 NVQs completed on
Merseyside as an accredited centre in conjunction with Education
Development International (EDI). The project is funded by the
government.
The MPs attending will be:
• Louise Ellman MP, Labour Riverside and chair of the Commons
Transport Select Committee, and George Howarth MP, Labour Knowsley
North and Sefton East, as well as Luciana Berger, Labour’s
prospective parliamentary candidate for Wavertree.
Unite learning organiser, Thomas McIntyre, said: “We are very
proud of this scheme which is giving our members additional skills
in areas such as looking after passengers with disabilities.
“Because of this project, 42 Unite taxi driver members have
become NVQ assessors and a further 32 are now tutors offering
training at colleges. Tomorrow the first 350 of our members from
Merseyside will be receiving their certificates.”
The NVQ involves seven three-hour sessions with a further two
observation periods of two hours apiece. Unite’s involvement also
extends to Southampton, Bristol and Gloucester and in the last 18
months about 1,600 Unite taxi driver members have received their
NVQs.
