Vote for industrial action at Gatwick and Stansted airports
21st August 2009
Members of Unite employed by Swissport as baggage handlers at
Gatwick and Stansted airports have voted in favour of industrial
action.
The positive results follow the announcement on Wednesday 19th
August that workers at Manchester Airport employed by Swissport
also voted in favour of industrial action.
Unite is seeking an urgent meeting with Swissport management in
an attempt to settle the dispute. Swissport has reneged on a pay
deal agreed last year. The two year deal committed to at least a
2.75 per cent pay increase in the second year but the company has
failed to honour the agreement.
Steve Turner, Unite's national officer for civil aviation, said:
“Our members have demonstrated clearly that they are prepared to
take part in industrial action and are willing to fight for fair
pay. These workers deserve recognition for their hard work and
their continued commitment, instead Swissport has turned its back
on the workers and failed to honour its side of the agreement.
"The union's shop stewards will consider the appropriate course
of action whilst urging Swissport to return to the negotiating
table and make a fair offer to avoid any industrial action."
