Unite update on RBS talks
23rd February 2009
Further to talks between Unite the union and RBS on the bank's
restructuring proposals today (Monday) and with no firm plans
discussed or shared with the union, Rob Macgregor, Unite's national
officer for the finance sector, said: "We are extremely frustrated
by the lack of clarity over the company's restructuring proposals
with no firm detail on plans or jobs discussed with
Unite.
"RBS has committed to consulting with Unite at the earliest
opportunity regarding plans around any job reductions, and to work
with Unite to mitigate or avoid any compulsory redundancies. Unite
will continue to push the company to be transparent about its plans
for the workforce and to accept that there will be no forced
redundancies.
"Over 100,000 workers in the UK, and some 70,000 workers across
the rest of the globe, rely on RBS for their livelihoods, and this
is a hugely worrying time for them and their families. This is not
a time for rumour and speculation. We urge all parties to behave
responsibly, resist the temptation to brief the media and instead
use the agreed structures to ensure workers and their union are
consulted fully."
