Unite the union is calling on out-of-work pipefitters to contact
Unite if they are looking for work
28 January 2009
Unite, Britain's biggest union, is calling on out-of-work
pipefitters based in the north east to contact Unite if they are
looking for work.
The union is challenging Heerema, a Hartlepool based
contractor, a company that is claiming that there are skills
shortages in the area and is therefore considering labour from
outside the north east.
Unite knows that there is skilled labour in the area qualified
to do the work and is calling on pipefitters to send in their CVs
and the union will submit them to Heerema.
Unite's regional secretary, Davey Hall, said: "With the
recession biting, jobs are scarce but my union, Unite, is
determined to ensure that workers from the north east can apply for
work that is available. We are urging pipefitters to contact Unite
so we can make the case to Heerema that there are no labour
shortages in the local area.
"We have grave concerns that the company may even decide upon
the use of overseas labour to the detriment of the local available
labour."
