Unite London cab drivers demonstrate against convicted
killer undergoing the Knowledge
9 September 2009
WHEN: 2pm, Thursday 10th September
WHERE: Penton Street, Islington, N1
Unite the Union’s London cab members will tomorrow (Thursday)
take part in a demonstration at the Public Carriage Office (PCO) in
Islington against the decision to permit a man who killed his wife
to undergo the Knowledge, the test all licensed London taxi drivers
need to pass before they can drive one of the capital's famous
black cabs.
The demonstration has been organised to protest against the
decision of the PCO to allow the man, who killed his wife in 2001
and was imprisoned under the Mental Health Act, to undergo the
Knowledge of London, leading to the coveted “green badge”, allowing
him to work as a licensed London Black Cab driver.
The demonstration will take the form of a go-slow ‘drive in’ at
Penton Street in Islington, the offices of the PCO. The demo has
the support of three drivers’ organisations that successfully
organised previous demonstrations in central London which have
attracted over 5000 cabs into Trafalgar Square.
Jim Kelly, Chair of Unite Cab Section said, “The Public Carriage
Office must act now to protect the public and the reputation,
quality and integrity of the world’s finest taxi drivers.”
