Unite fights to save Glasgow manufacturing jobs
8 January 2009
Unite the union yesterday (Wednesday, 7th
January) held a meeting via videolink with the American management
of Flexible Ducting based in Milngavie, Glasgow to state the case
for retaining the business and a 'significant proportion' of the
jobs.
Unite, the UK’s largest trade union, is
preparing an alternative business plan for submission to the
company's management on Monday (12th January) to retain the
business operation and a number of the proposed 85 jobs losses.
In November 2008 the company, which
manufactures hose-pipe components for Dyson Hoovers, announced the
closure of the plant. The union was informed by the company's
director of operations, US-based Jay Schlageter of the Flex-Tek
Group, that the plant no longer has a future due to the relocation
of their key customer to a low-cost site in Malaysia which
accounted for 50 per cent of the plant's turnover.
Unite Regional Officer, Tony Devlin, said:
“Unite and our members are working extremely hard
to put forward a realistic and sustainable business plan to the
company's management as we firmly believe that the closure of plant
is not a formality or necessary.
“We will continue the fight to ensure that
management explores all avenues to bridge the turnover gap and to
sustain employment. It is vital that every effort is made to retain
quality manufacturing jobs and this is our priority.”
