Unite condemns job cuts at Wincanton Chilled, Trafford Park

Unite Regional Industrial Organiser, Neil Clarke, commenting on
the announcement of 400 job losses at Wincanton Chilled, Trafford
Park, Manchester said: "It is outrageous that at a time of such
economic crisis employers are seizing the opportunity to close
viable, profitable sites leaving hundreds of workers without
employment and with little prospect of securing decent employment
in the area.
"These job losses will have a devastating economic effect on
families and the community during these difficult times. Unite is
in talks with Wincanton and we will do everything in our power to
stop the closure of the site.
"Wincanton’s decision to merge its chilled food business with
Culina is about cutting costs and competition by setting up
operations elsewhere with inferior terms and condition. We have met
with the company three times yet the announcement was made without
proper consultation and notification and was little short of a
sham."
