BP pockets mega-profits while UK shivers
As oil giant BP returns yet another quarter of bumper profits,
Unite, the UK's biggest union, has called for more to be done to
deliver fuel justice.
"Last week Shell reported record profits and today, as Britain
is blanketed in snow, we have BP posting mind-boggling profits
too," said Derek Simpson, joint general secretary of Unite.
"Hard-pressed households are fed up with the gross disparity
between their struggle to pay their bills and the enormous profits
banked by the oil and fuel giants.
"What people up and down the country who cannot heat their
homes, or live in terror of their fuel bills, want to know is when
there will be some justice in the price of energy.
"If the companies themselves won't play fair by consumers, then
the government must make them do so through a windfall tax on
excessive profits."
Mr Simpson was commenting on BP's 2008 profits, which were today
reported as having jumped by 39 per cent on the previous year to
$25.59 billion.
