"Is that it? Where's the change?" asks Derek Simpson as the Tories
reveal their `big' ideas for the economy
6th October 2009
Commenting on shadow chancellor George Osborne's address to the
Tory conference in Manchester today (Tuesday), Derek Simpson, joint
general secretary of Unite said: "The best that can be said is that
the nation is underwhelmed. There will be enormous sighs of 'is
that it?' ringing around the homes and workplaces of Britain
today.
"If the extent of the Tories' promise on the economy is to
freeze pay in 2011, then people will rightly ask where's the change
because that is the government's policy now.
"But not only do Osborne and Cameron fail to offer anything new
for our country; they are also all too vague when it comes to what
they would do about the rogue behaviour of their old school friends
in the City. Let's hear some truth about that so the public can
tell if the Tories really offer a change or just a pig in a
poke.
"We now have a choice over the substance of our leadership. On
the one hand we have a world statesman, hailed by other leaders for
his incisiveness in handling the economic crisis, and a cabinet who
have pledged to ensure sound stewardship of the economy is matched
with compassion.
"On the other, we have the Tories who despite 12 years in
opposition have no real new ideas, are reduced to parroting Labour,
would do nothing to support manufacturing, would have let the banks
collapse and their only real idea is to hit middle earners with the
removal of tax credits. The people of Britain know the real deal
when they see it."
