Unite integration complete
18 December 2008
Today, the Executive Council of Unite agreed all outstanding
elements of the integration process to complete the merger between
Amicus and the Transport and General Workers Union.
The unanimous agreement establishes one administration for the
whole union, one finance department, one IT department, one
education department and one personnel department.
The structures for lay participation in the governance of the
union will be in place for the next EC meeting in January.
Joint General Secretary, Derek Simpson said: "This is an
historic day, the merger of our two great unions is finally
complete and not a moment too soon. Our members need their union to
be at full strength to get them through the difficult times
ahead."
Joint General Secretary, Tony Woodley said: "Our members voted
to create this one, great union and today their vision is
delivered. Our progress will disappoint those vested interests and
boardrooms who want Unite to fail and who fear our intention to
become the strongest fighting force for workers this country has
ever seen. Now we can focus on the tough challenges ahead. Members
can rest assured that as this recession bites, their union will be
at the frontline of fighting for their jobs and living
standards."
