Union leader visits finance workers in
Liverpool
24 September 2008
Unite Joint leader Derek Simpson will today (Wednesday 24
September) be showing his support for finance workers in Liverpool
during the credit crunch in a visit to Royal and Sun Alliance.
As the economic crisis unfolds Derek Simpson
has demanded that the government reform the city bonus culture
which he says is “out of control”. Unite is calling for a new
regulatory system to outlaw the remuneration packages which reward
risk and corporate greed.
Derek Simpson, Unite Joint General Secretary,
says: “The finance workers in Liverpool are not the fat cats in the
city of London earning massive bonuses, but hard working employees
some of which earn just £12,000 per year. It is vital that they do
not pay the price for the mistakes of the gluttonous bankers out
for a quick buck.
“The current economic turmoil has no greater
price then the human cost. The threat of job losses means that
thousands of staff, and their families, are facing an uncertain
future. The financial services sector has been brought to its knees
through a system of secrecy within which many large investors are
not accountable to anyone.”
The union has welcomed Gordon Brown's
recognition that the financial system needs a "clean up" and has
praised the government for its hand in ensuring the FSA
cracked-down on stock market speculators, trying to make a profit
from the falling share prices of banks and insurance companies.
