London bus workers at Hackney to strike over dismissal of shop steward

30 May 2008

Unite members at CT Plus bus company, based in Hackney, will be taking strike action on Monday (2nd June). CT Plus buses provide Transport for London, school contracts and special need services.

The action was voted for overwhelmingly by members of the UK's largest trade union, which includes bus drivers, supervisors, engineers and admin staff, following the sacking of the union shop steward Denis Shine. Mr Shine had only been in his steward role for four weeks when the company dismissed him for taking action over what he believed was a genuine health and safety issue.

Unite Regional Officer, Adam Powell, says: "We are disappointed that it has come to this. We believe that the dismissal of our shop steward was particularly harsh and has seriously damaged industrial relations at the company.

"Our members do not take this action lightly and it shows the strength of feelings.  We believe that this is part of a wider seam of discontent in the workplace."

The strike action, which will start at 3.30am and finish at 9.30am, comes at a time when the relatively new bus company should be looking forward to improve relations with it's employees as it has recently won the transport contract for the 2012 Olympics.

Further strike action planned for Friday 13 June 1.30pm to 7pm.

TfL routes affected 388, 153, 394, W13.
