Carnaval del Pueblo, Latin American festival
Carnaval del Pueblo, Latin American
festival
Sunday 1 August 2010
Burgess Park, near Elephant & Castle, south London
London’s Latin American community and Unite have been working
hard for the past 10 years, organising Latin American migrants into
the union, working with Latino activists in providing
representation and negotiation with the employers, often the major
cleaning companies that can treat migrant communities quite badly
at work.
Unite in partnership with the Latin Americans, working as
Justice for Cleaners, has been effective in obtaining at least the
London Living Wage for cleaners whose employers are the contractors
to multinational financial institutions in the City and on Canary
Wharf.
Unite is also working the Latino community on cultural issues
and is a major supporter of Carnaval del Pueblo, the biggest Latin
American cultural event held outside of Latin America.
This year the Carnaval takes place on Sunday 1 August in Burgess
Park near the Elephant & Castle in south London. Unite is
hosting a music stage for the whole day where all Unite members
will be made welcome. All Unite members should try to come along to
experience a day of Latin music, food and the excitement of
Carnaval.
