Workers choke on Cadbury's gut-busting profits
29th July 2009
Cadbury's workers fighting to get their employer to uphold a
measly but agreed pay deal were today left choking when the
chocolate company unveiled its latest profits.
Cadbury today announced its half year results, which revealed an
increase in profits of 24 per cent. This is on top of the 30 per
cent increase last year. The company registered staggering profits
of £262 million, which exceeded all expectations.
Jennie Formby, Unite national officer for the food and retail
sector, said: “Gut-busting profits like these have been delivered
by our members and their hard graft. It is only fair then that they
get their pay deal, as agreed. Surely Cadbury is happy with today's
profits - and doesn't need to swallow workers' wages too?
“These results must be reflected in our members' pay so we
expect the company to honour the final year of the three year pay
deal.”
Unite says that there was a fantastic response today from the
workers at all Cadbury's sites - at Bourneville, Chirk, Marlbrook
and Somerdale - who came out in protest at the company's pay
betrayal.
1,300 Cadbury's workers are currently being balloted on taking
action to protect their pay deal.
