Workers at Manchester quilt company strike over shift pay squeeze

3 August 2009

Unite the union members employed at Bedcrest Ltd in Middleton, Manchester are to commence a series of 24 hour strikes today (Monday 3rd August).  Further all day stoppages are set for Monday 10th August, Monday 17th August and Friday 28th August 2009. In addition, Unite members will begin a continuous overtime ban from today.

Around 80 workers at the continental quilt and pillow manufacturers, who supply bedding to major supermarkets including Tesco, are striking over management’s plans to change their contract of employment.  Workers are angry over proposals to cut shift premiums by five per cent over two years and holidays by three days.

Unite believes Bedcrest is using the recession to cut costs and is urging the company to work with the union to find a better way forward.

Unite regional industrial organiser, Mick Chalmers said:  “These workers are not well-paid to begin with and are now facing a squeeze on the pay packet over plans to cut their shift payments and holidays. Our members are already struggling in the current recession to support their families. This is not good news.

“We are disappointed that the company wants to make permanent changes instead of looking at short-term solutions to ride out the recession. We are willing to work with management at any opportunity to discuss ways of facing the problems together. “
