Unite welcomes the resignation of Royal Horticultural
Chief
9 September 2009
Unite the union has welcomed the resignation of Royal
Horticultural Society chief executive, Inga Grimsey today and is
calling for the suspension of the Society's botched restructuring
exercise.
Welcoming the resignation, Unite national secretary, Chris
Kaufman said: "The restructuring exercise has been an unmitigated
disaster which has reduced morale to rock bottom. The Society
has been shocked by the numbers of gardeners volunteering for
redundancy.
"RHS staff jobs, pensions and tied houses have been under
threat. The society has refused to talk to Unite or allow the
unions on to the site. They have claimed to consult with the
workforce, but it has been a sham.
"This morning for the first time in many months, workers
are walking around with smiles on their faces.
Unite is now calling on the RHS to suspend its flawed restructuring
exercise and to work with the unions constructively. It has been
obscene to see higher management recruited on large salaries to
then sack gardeners on £16,000 a year. Let's use Inga Grimsey's
resignation as an opportunity to make a fresh start."
