Unite welcomes decision to abandon Cheltenham & Gloucester
branch closures, but is angry over poor management
19th August 2008
Unite, the union which represents staff across the Cheltenham
& Gloucester (C&G) branch network, has welcomed the Lloyds
Banking Group’s (LBG) decision to abandon the planned closure of
the C&G branch network.
Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer, said: “Unite is satisfied
that the Lloyds Banking Group has finally acknowledged that the
decision to close the Cheltenham & Gloucester branch network
was ill considered. The decision to hold a review is to be
welcomed.
“This news will bring some relief to the 900 staff who work in
C&G branches up and down the UK. The anxiety and stress they
have endured over the last 10 weeks since they were told that they
would lose their jobs smacks of poor management.
“Today’s announcement comes with no warning and will make the
workforce wonder whether their bosses have any long term strategy
for the future of the bank. Unite finds it wholly unacceptable that
the LBG changes its mind on the future of its staff as fast as the
summer weather in this country.
“Unite has today demanded an urgent meeting with the LBG in
order to get clarification as to the format and timescales of the
review.”
