Unite urges French government not to put 2000 UK jobs at risk
2 December 2009
Unite, Britain's biggest union is today urging the French
Government not to sell Areva's transmission and distribution
service which could affect 2000 jobs in the UK.
Unite representatives are in France today at Areva's European
Works Council where members of the Works Council will make clear
their opposition to the sale. There are currently three bidders
being considered by the French Government to buy Areva's T&D
business, GE, Toshiba and Alstom Schieder. Unite and Areva's EWC
want the French Government, the main shareholder, to keep the Areva
group in its current form.
Areva T&D employs 2000 workers in the UK and employs
thousands more across Europe.
Unite's national secretary for Manufacturing, John Rowse said:
"We believe the sale of Areva's T&D business will put UK jobs
at risk. Along with Areva workers across Europe, Unite is
urging Nicolas Sarkozy to keep Areva's T&D business
within the group and ditch plans to sell the business."
