Unite tells students 'let’s stand together'
1 April 2009
Unite, Britain's biggest union, is supporting the National Union
of Students’ (NUS) three day annual conference in Blackpool from
31st March until 2nd April 2009.
Unite’s internationally acclaimed Working Student Campaign will
address over a thousand delegates on numerous issues facing working
students such as employment law, economic climate and international
social justice.
Unite says that student employment has doubled over the last ten
years but less than seven per cent belong to a trade union. Unite
wants to encourage more working students, who are currently in some
of the lowest paid jobs, to sign up to a union. The
conference also gives Unite the opportunity to speak to student
leaders and activists to understand what more can be done for
working students.
Unite National Co-ordinator, David Braniff-Herbert, said:
“Our role as a modern trade union is to find real solutions to
hardship facing students at work. We must continue to
organise the unorganised and work with the student movement to
achieve representation and respect for our members in the
workplace.”
The Unite Working Students Campaign began in September 2006,
recently after the National Union of Students signed a protocol
agreement with the Trades Union Congress signifying a powerful
partnership between the two movements.
