Unite's reaction to the latest unemployment figures

17 June 2009

Unite's joint general secretary, Derek Simpson said: "Unemployment is still unacceptably high. The increase is less than expected but unemployment has still risen to a 12 year high, so this is no time for complacency. Working families' jobs and homes are under threat.

"Labour acted decisively to bail out the banks and avoided a depression. But the government must still do more to support British industry, particularly manufacturing. The Tories would have let the banks go to the wall and the recession would have lasted until doomsday."
