Unite's reaction to Dairy Farmers of Britain closure
12th June 2009
Responding to the announcement that Dairy Farmers of Britain
will close its Welsh plant at Bridgend from 6pm tonight, Unite
regional industrial officer, John Toner, said: “We are bitterly
disappointed that the joint receiver PricewaterhouseCoopers will
close the Bridgend factory from 6pm tonight resulting in the loss
of 270 jobs.
“The Welsh assembly wants Welsh milk to be distributed to Welsh
schools, but the loss of milk production in Bridgend will make this
aspiration even harder to achieve.”
Dairy Farmers of Britain blames the competitive market and its
small margins over a number of years as reasons for this sudden
closure.
