Unite reaction to Royal Bank of Scotland job loss decision

20th May 2009

Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer, said: “For 700 staff in the Royal Bank of Scotland the news today that they are to lose their jobs will be a massive blow. Since the announcement by the bank in April that 4,500 people will be made redundant, staff across the company have been living with uncertainty about their future. This confirmation for employees in the IT and property divisions that they will be the ones hit is devastating.

“Royal Bank of Scotland staff across the UK, and particularly those in London and Edinburgh offices who are mainly impacted by today's announcement, face the reality of the cuts Royal Bank of Scotland is determined to reach. Unite has told the bank it is opposed to compulsory job losses and will be pressing the company through ongoing engagement to offer continued employment within Royal Bank of Scotland for those affected.”
