Unite reaction to Barclays job losses

23 June 2009

Rob MacGregor, Unite national officer, said: "Unite is opposed to the decision by Barclays today (Tuesday) to cut 190 staff from its two centres in Liverpool. This represents a short-term approach to savings by the bank, at a cost to the skills base and economy of the local community.

"Unite is appalled that rather than realising the potential for creating a centre of excellence in Liverpool, Barclays has simply taken the easiest way out and chosen to shut the sites. The union has questioned the logic of closing two productive centres.

"We are totally opposed to compulsory job losses and will be meeting with our members over the coming days."
