Unite London bus drivers advised to stick to their contracts, as
strike looms
9th June 2009
Unite, the UK’s biggest union, has today (Tuesday) warned
Transport for London, (TfL) that its 23,000 bus driver members will
not be performing duties beyond their contractual obligations and
won’t be undermining any industrial action by the Rail, Maritime
and Transport union (RMT).
The RMT is set to call a two day strike starting at 7pm today in
a dispute over pay and the threat of compulsory redundancies.
Peter Kavanagh, Unite regional industrial organiser, said: “The
union is seeking details from TfL about its contingency plans which
apparently involve drafting in 100 extra buses.
“We have expressed our solidarity with RMT in their fight for a
decent pay settlement and assurances over no compulsory
redundancies. We urge management and London mayor, Boris Johnson to
intervene constructively so that there will be a settlement.
“Unite will be closely monitoring the effects of industrial
action on the health and safety of our members. Up to three million
extra passengers will attempt to use an already crowded bus network
and therefore the potential for added pressures and stress on our
members will be considerable.
“Unite will not allow members to be placed in compromising
situations where the possible demands from management are in
conflict with our members’ contracts.”
