Unite condemns irresponsible leaking of RBS job losses - and warns
of vigorous opposition to compulsory redundancies
22nd February 2009
Unite the union, reacting to reports today (Sunday) that one in
five RBS employees globally could lose their job, condemned
irresponsible briefing on cuts, saying it was very distressing for
workers in the UK and elsewhere learn their fate via the media.
The union stressed that a scheduled meeting with the workers'
representatives tomorrow was the appropriate arena in which to
discuss restructuring plans
According to Rob MacGregor, Unite's national officer for the
finance sector: "This is already an extremely worrying time for
finance workers so it is distressing for those at RBS to hear
rumours of more job losses like this. We expect a company like RBS
to conduct itself more responsibly.
"Until we meet with RBS tomorrow for scheduled talks on the
CEO's strategic review, the workers and their union remain in the
dark about the bank's intentions.
"Unite's team in RBS, however, will be making it clear to
management that we will be vigorously opposing any compulsory
redundancies and any attempt to outsource UK jobs.
"Our priority is to defend our members' jobs and we will be
seeking an urgent meeting with the Government to press that where
the state has a stake in banks, as it does with RBS, that there is
a duty to ensure that any change process is managed in an orderly
and humane manner."
RBS's global workforce is estimated to be around 170,000. RBS
has already announced 2,300 UK job losses but these are in advance
and separate from the strategic review.
Unite has stated that it is prepared to work with the new
management to bring about orderly reorganisation as long as
guarantees are received and implemented about job security.
