Unite condemns ‘death by a thousand cuts’ at Barclays
13 January 2009
Unite, the UK’s largest union, has today (Tuesday, January 13th)
branded the latest 500 job losses announced by Barclays as a
strategy of ‘death by a thousand cuts’.
The union believes the latest job cuts in the wealth function
represent a total failure by Barclays to give their workforce the
full picture of their plans for the bank. Unite has been consulted
on at least 3,000 job losses to be announced before the summer.
Graham Goddard, Unite Deputy General Secretary, said: "This
latest announcement of a further 500 job losses is the latest in a
string of announcements by Barclays over the last few weeks. Unite
has stressed to the bank that they should share the big picture and
come clean with their staff in order to reassure them that they
will not be the next victim of the bank’s strategy of ‘death by a
thousand cuts’.
"Staff in Wealth are the most recent losers of the ongoing job
cuts at Barclays. Just last week we saw 400 IT staff lose their
jobs from Barclays in London and Cheshire.
"We can not continue with this situation of daily job cuts
without any justification or explanation of the broader strategy
for the bank. In this economic environment it is not acceptable for
Barclays staff to arrive at work each day with the dread that they
could be next in what appears to be a lottery of job losses at
Barclays."Unite will be working to avoid any compulsory
redundancies at the bank.
