Unite comment on Ryanair chief’s plans to axe checked-in luggage

24 June 2009

Unite national officer for civil air transport, Steve Turner, said: "Creating the impression that passengers can carry their own luggage onto the hold of a plane beggars belief. This is not possible for a number of reasons, security being the main one.

"The Ryanair chief’s suggestion that passengers can ‘bring unlimited bags as long as they can get them through security’ is totally unviable as the overhead cabinets are limited to a maximum weight for the safety of passengers and staff.

"This is just another half-cooked plan by Ryanair which has not been thought through."
