Unite calls on UK industry to follow BAE Systems lead on pensions
23 February 2009
Unite, the UK’s biggest aerospace and engineering union, today
(Monday) welcomed BAE Systems announcement that it will not be
changing any benefits or asking workers to increase their
contributions.
This good news comes despite an increase in the deficit of the
BAE pension scheme.
Derek Simpson, Unite joint general secretary, said: “This
announcement comes at a time when the UK economy is facing
financial pressure and is a welcome change to hear good news from
one of the UK's largest companies.
“I call on the rest of the British industry to follow BAE's lead
and end the disgraceful attacks on pensions, reductions in
benefits, increase in contributions and shift of risk to
employees.”
