Strike looms over Christmas working at West Midlands poultry
supplier
9th December 2009
Meat workers from the West Midlands are holding a ballot for
industrial action over Christmas working hours at Cargill Meats in
Hereford.
Over 500 union members are angry that the company is forcing them
to work on the Monday 28th Christmas bank holiday without any
increase to their normal contractual terms.
Simon Powell, regional industrial organiser, said: “So much for the
season of goodwill! Due to the supermarkets’ demands, Cargill Meats
is forcing staff to work on a Christmas bank holiday without any
additional enhancement to bank holiday pay. All our members want is
some recognition for their commitment and I urge management to get
round the table to resolve this on behalf of the workforce."
A legal ballot giving the option to take strike action has
commenced and concludes on December 18th.
