Manchester First Bus drivers continue strike action

25 September 2009

Unite the union members working at First Bus, Manchester, will continue strike action on Monday (28th September) in an ongoing dispute over a zero per cent pay offer.

This is the fourth 24-hour official stoppage by drivers at the Wigan, Bolton, and Bury depots. Workers are angry that despite record profits of £134 million the company is refusing to give employees a fair pay rise.

Unite will meet First Bus management at the conciliation service ACAS today (Friday, 25th September) for talks aimed at resolving the dispute. The union is urging First Bus management to engage in meaningful negotiations to avert further strike action and major disruption to commuters in Manchester.

Unite regional industrial organiser, Bobby Morton, said: “Unite is pleased that First Bus has agreed ‘face to face’ talks with ACAS. However, this company has constantly failed to listen to the workforce or put an offer on the table which would resolve the situation as quickly as possible.

“Unite members will not accept this derisory pay offer. Strike action is the only way to make this ‘greedy’ company sit down and take negotiations seriously.

“We hope the talks will be productive but 24-hour stoppage by Manchester First Bus drivers will go ahead on Monday, 28th September from 4:00 am. Further, we cannot rule out continued industrial action until we have a pay offer acceptable to our members.”
