London Underground waste another opportunity to settle
pay dispute, says Unite
9 November 2009
Unite, the union representing workers across London Underground,
has reacted strongly to London Underground’s rejection today
(Monday) at a meeting at ACAS, of approaches made to settle the
outstanding pay dispute.
Unite, the UK’s largest union, and other trade unions have been
faced with a serious lack of commitment on the part of London
Underground (LU) to deal with the outstanding pay claim for 2009,
which should have been settled by the end of March.
LU’s last serious offer was in July and they have refused to
negotiate further in the last four months. Unite has put options on
the table to resolve the dispute but this has been snubbed by the
company.
John Morgan-Evans, Unite regional officer, said: “London
Underground could have used today’s meeting at ACAS to do some real
deal-making to resolve this damaging dispute. Instead it has chosen
to put the travelling public’s journey to work at risk of further
disruption.
“Not only has it further alienated the unions, who had not
accepted the deal, one of our sister unions has now reversed its
decision to accept its pay offer because of the actions of its
Employment Relations people today.
“We agree with them that London Underground has shown contempt
for the unions and their own employees. Once again, we would urge
LU to meet and negotiate in good faith with the unions to settle
this dispute.”
Unite is balloting its members in LU on the pay claim, which is
worth 1.5% for 2009-10 and RPI plus 0.5% for 2010-11.
