Government support for nuclear industry will create skilled manufacturing jobs, says Unite

3 December 2009

Responding to the Government's announcement on new support for the civil nuclear industry outlined today (Thursday 3rd December), Dougie Rooney, Unite national officer for energy said:  "Unite believes that up to 10,000 skilled UK manufacturing jobs can be created in the engineering supply chain for the next generation of nuclear power stations.

Lord Mandelson's announcement is a major boost for British manufacturing and puts the UK on the road to becoming a global player in the engineering and manufacturing supply chain for nuclear power. This is good news for jobs, our economy and for Britain's energy security. It shows that Labour is on the side of investment and job creation while the Tories want to manage decline."

The Government's support to Sheffield Forgemasters, Rolls Royce and a centre of excellence for manufacturing is a fine example of an active government that supports industrial innovation and excellence."
