File McKinsey NHS report where it belongs, in the bin, says Unite

3rd September 2009

Unite, Britain's biggest union, today slammed as "predictable and predictably unhelpful" recommendations from consultancy firm McKinsey that the NHS should slash one in ten workers, including axing staff in vital roles, placing even more pressure on already overburdened health care workers.

Karen Reay, Unite's national officer for the health service, said: "Just as investment is beginning to pay off in terms of delivering for patients on waiting lists, McKinsey reminds us yet again that the private sector response to our public health service is predictable and predictably unhelpful.

"McKinsey's desire to take the axe to even essential clinical posts would set back the advances in care made in recent times by years, would frighten patients and would demoralise dedicated staff.

"Thankfully the Department of Health is not prepared to give this report house room and should instead focus on working with health professionals to discuss how we can meet the challenges ahead as a team.  The minister should file this paper in the most appropriate place, the bin."

you only have to look at mental health services in luton to see what cuts mean as they are planning to close part of the low secure unit,ie robin pinto unit 2,formerly known as orchard2,afterwhich where do patients go then that require picu care? essex, hertfordshire,or private forensic units? is it no wonder mental haelth staff get a bad name when something goes wrong in the community with lack of care,or in the wards if any with overcrowding and lack of staff particularly experienced and qualified staff
