Corus unions meet with Marcegaglia in Italy regarding the future of
the Teeside plant
22nd May 2009
Michael Leahy, the general secretary of the union Community, and
Terry Pye, Unite's national officer for the steel industry, met
with Antonio Marcegaglia, CEO of Marcegaglia in Italy today
(Friday) regarding the future of Corus' Teeside plant.
The plant is currently under threat because a consortium, which
Marcegaglia is part of, has pulled out of a ten year agreement to
buy 78 percent of the plant's production, threatening 2,000
jobs.
Marcegaglia indicated that, under the right circumstances, it
was willing to use its good offices to encourage its partners to
sit down with Corus in the UK to explore new possible commercial
solutions which will preserve production at TCP and assist the
process of safeguarding jobs at Teesside. This is the message the
unions take back to Corus and the UK government and hope that they
will ensure such talks can take place as a matter of urgency.
