Bus drivers at the East London Bus Group confirm strike action
6th November 2009
Thousands of Unite members working for the East London Bus Group
will be taking part in a 24 hour strike from 3am on Monday (9th
November) in a dispute over the company’s imposition of a zero
percent pay deal.
Unite has been in discussions with the company on pay since
April 2009 and after a couple meetings, the company decided that it
would impose a pay freeze. Unite members disagreed and voted to
reject the offer and to take strike action.
Unite regional industrial organiser, John Griffiths, said: “Our
members are extremely loyal and hardworking and will not tolerate
this unacceptable behaviour towards them. All our members want is
to be treated fairly and we urge management to get back to the
negotiating table with a fair and reasonable offer to end this
dispute.”
There was a last attempt to reach a resolution but these talks
failed yesterday (Thursday, 5th November), therefore the planned
industrial action will take place on Monday.
This strike will affect 58 routes and approx 750 buses across
East London and the City including night buses. The East London Bus
Group employs 2600 workers of which 2400 are Unite members.
The garages affect are: Barking; Bow; Leyton; Romford;
Upton Park; West Ham
